Why do kids do that?

  1. Excessive blinking :




This can be due to dry eyes or allergy in the eyes. A full eye assessment is needed to determine the cause and provide effective treatment.



  1. Rubbing of the eyes/ Red eyes / Swelling around the eyes:



Rubbing the eyes is a symptom of allergic eye disease that can lead to red eyes and puffiness around the eyes. Assessment of the anterior part of the eyes is needed to diagnose and treat effectively.

 

 

  1. Excessive tearing: 



This can be a sign of a blocked tear duct and is encountered in 5% to 20% of normal newborns. The defective draining of tears can lead to their stagnation on the ocular surface and recurrent episodes of conjunctivitis.

Excessive tearing can also be a sign of corneal (front membrane of the eye) pathology or high pressure in the eye and warrants paediatric eye specialist evaluation.



  1. Going very close to the TV/ holding the book very close to read:



This is common behaviour, especially in young children, as the closer they get to the screen the more they feel part of the show they are watching or the book they are reading. A visual and refraction assessment will determine if the eyes have a normal refractive error or if a glasses' prescription is needed.
